2011 SEAT Alhambra
Seat, the Spain –based automobile manufacturer has unveiled a new-generation, 2011 SEAT Alhambra. Shaped with more elegance, athleticism and flexibility than ever, the new large MPV from Seat offers surprisingly dynamic driving experience, powerful drivelines ranging from 140 to 200 horsepower and the latest hi-tech technology innovations.
Seducing its customers with amazing levels of average fuel consumption – just 5.5 litres -, the 2011 Alhambra undoubtedly tops its segment’s efficiency chart.
James Muir, President of SEAT, S.A. shares: “Innovation and intelligence are the keywords for our new Alhambra. It represents a major step forward in terms of usability as well as dynamics and safety. Its impressive concept combines the highest levels of functionality and state-of-the-art technology with excellent quality and workmanship. This also includes – in typical SEAT fashion – exceptional good value-for-money.”
With new dimensions – 22 centimetres longer and 9 centimeters wider – , the new-generation Seat Alhambra represents the perfect size for a European MPV. It packs ultra-spacious luggage compartment, which boasts 885 litres base volume with five seats occupied and the amazing 2,297 litres if only the front two seats are in use.
Under the well-shaped, flexible, new-generation MPV, Seat offers a power units line-up, where all TSI and TDI engines are fitted with direct fuel injection and turbochargers. The TSI engines produce 150 horsepower (110 kW) and 200 horsepower (147 kW), while the two TDI engines offer 140 horsepower (103 kW) and 170 horsepower (125 kW). Further efficiency technologies fitted as standard include the stop/start system and brake energy regeneration – the recovery of kinetic energy. These features guarantee enhanced pulling power alongside exceptional efficiency. With an average fuel consumption of only 5.5 litres and CO2 emissions of just 143 g/km, the SEAT Alhambra 2.0 TDI with 140 horsepower (103 kW) sets a clear benchmark in this vehicle class. The Alhambra TDI is also equipped with an SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction), making even the diesel model one of the world’s cleanest MPVs.
2009 Volkswagen Scirocco
Volkswagen has officials unveiled its Scirocco hatchback, which goes on sale in Europe.
“In the Scirocco we will be bringing the kind of sports car into the showroom that people dream of. Yet it is a dream that an exceptionally large number of car drivers will be able to afford — despite all of the high-end technologies we have implemented,” CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn said.
With a length of 168 inches, the Scirocco is on par with the Golf. However, it is built significantly lower to the ground and is nearly as wide as the larger Passat sedan.
There is seating for four adults, including the driver. Once they are all aboard, the Scirocco provides 292 liters of cargo capacity; when the two seatbacks of the individual rear seats are folded down, capacity increases to 755 liters.
There are three TSI gasoline engines offered and one TDI diesel. The gas engines deliver 120, 158, or 145 horsepower. The diesel motor develops 140 horsepower. The standard transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
A panoramic glass roof is available, which extends from the A-pillars to the B-pillars. The glass reflects 99 percent of UV radiation, 97 percent of infrared radiation (heat) and 80 percent of visible light.
Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, height adjustable driver and front passenger seats and steering wheel, leather parking brake grip, sport seats, split folding rear seats, power windows, air conditioning, ESP, braking assistant, six airbags, speed-dependent power steering, and of course a sport chassis.
Reports surfaced a few months ago suggesting the Scirocco would not be offered in the North American market, but the appearance of prototypes this summer on U.S. soil suggests otherwise.
In late April, Volkswagen of America executive Adrian Hallmark said the new Scirocco hatchback would not come to the United States because “we don’t want it.” He implied it would cannibalize sales of the GTI.
But in May, spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode said the final decision will not be made by Volkswagen of America, but rather by VW CEO Martin Winterkorn in Germany.

2012 Opel Astra SUV
Besides the Opel Corsa SUV, the rescue could be for Opel Antwerp, Opel was based on the new Opel Astra build an SUV. This Opel Astra SUV would be a worthy replacement for the Opel Antara. The Opel Antara is not really a success and that we might declare the car because obviously its platform with the Chevrolet Captiva shares. The Opel Astra us SUV would be reminiscent of yesteryear, the Opel Frontera, a very capable off-roader that before the SUV craze scored very well.
Thanks to the impression we can already picture an idea of how an Astra SUV could look like. The car will clear the new Opel design language which the Opel Astra and Opel Insignia features today. However, the SUV with a much rougher eyes wider wheel arches and a prominent guard. SUV in the Astra profile looks rather slim, so the illusion of a Crossover SUV is aroused.
Under the hood of the SUV Opel Astra we will most likely engine from the Astra and Insignia-range retrieval, since the engine no longer meets the Antara EURO5 standards. In the petrol will include a 1.4 Turbo ECOTEC with 140 horsepower, a 1.6 Turbo ECOTEC with 180 hp and possibly the 2.0 Turbo with 220 hp. In diesel engines would be room for the 1.7 CDTI with 110 hp and the 2.0 CDTI with 130 hp or 160. The Astra would like the Opel SUV Antara optionally be equipped with four-wheel drive, front-wheel drive are standard.

The Curious Lack of Demand for Electric Vehicles
United States automakers are gearing up efforts to produce more fuel-efficient and alternative vehicles, including hybrids and electric vehicles. Fuel prices have risen on average 21.8% in the last year due to instability in the Middle East and Japan and other factors; crude prices now hover around $100 a barrel and prices are predicted to remain unstable. The federal government is pushing for more fuel efficiency through new emissions standards and subsidies to automakers as well as consumers. In August of 2009, $2.4 billion of stimulus money was allocated for the development of electric vehicles, and the Obama administration has a stated goal of 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2015. In addition, new fuel emissions standards will require new vehicle averages of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016, an increase of 10 mpg over current standards.
Automakers Scrambling to Make More Electric Vehicles
Automakers are scrambling to comply. Two new electric vehicles are on the market – Nissan’s Leaf and GM’s Chevy Volt. Chrysler is working on a hydraulic hybrid minivan developed in partnership with the EPA. Ford is pushing their new “Eco-Boost” engine technology, and other car companies are continuing to expand their hybrid and fuel-efficiency vehicle lines.
Where is consumer demand?
Hybrid vehicles only account for 2.0% -2.5% of vehicle sales. And sales of the Leaf and Volt have been disappointing. A study in late 2010 by J.D. Power and Associates found that electric cars are still too costly for consumers’ tastes and that demand is unlikely to change much for another decade. On average, a fuel-efficient hybrid will cost an additional $5,000 over traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. The study predicted that by 2020 only 7.3% would be hybrid or battery-operated vehicles. The study reported that consumers are also worried about the range of electric vehicles which need to be recharged at least every 50 miles. Gas prices are not yet high enough to force consumers to consider alternatives and drivers also have concerns about the reliability of the new technology. Some simply dislike the look or design of the vehicles and don't want to give up their massive SUVs.
Other Market Influences
There are other issues as well. Debate abounds about whether electric cars will reduce carbon emissions sufficiently if coal-fired plants are providing the electricity used to power the vehicles. Also, at least one of these “electric” cars, the Volt, still utilizes a gasoline engine to help maintain the charge and the fine print reveals that 25-50 miles is the expected range in moderate conditions. Additionally, there is the question of how to dispose of depleted battery packs and the impact of those on the environment.
Despite tax credit incentives of as much as $7500 and possibly more in the future, consumers are still wary of this technology. It remains to be seen whether concerns over cost and practicality can be overcome enough to spur demand the way automakers, the government and environmentalists would like. While the current low demand makes the EV market a little shaky, rising gas prices and increasing environmental concerns do seem to be picking up the pace. Many consumers prefer electric to gasoline when given a choice. A recovering economy should help consumers afford the cars they prefer, and probably sooner than J.D. Power and Associates thinks.
